Committed to help East African children reach their potential |

Who are we? Build The Future is an all-volunteer non-profit organization based in Seattle, Washington working to help East African children reach their potential. At BTF we believe that education is vital to nation-building. It's an essential ingredient that allows people to achieve economic independence, improve and protect their own and their family's health, and build and participate in a democracy Our Mission BTF's mission is to improve the lives of East African children through educational opportunities. Our History Mr. Wabula Kangala is the founder and President of Build the Future. Wabula grew up in Butiru Uganda, a small village in Eastern Uganda about 15 miles from the border with Kenya. His parents were sustenance farmers and raised 9 surviving children. The political climate in Uganda changed while Wabula grew up. One of Wabula’s uncles was a finance minister in the government and paid for him to attend school in Tororo, Uganda. However, during this time Idi Amin became the dictator of Uganda. Because young men were being conscripted into the military against their will, Wabula chose to flee the country. He escaped to Kenya as a refugee. While in Kenya, Wabula had the fortune to find work at a dairy farm. The family who owned the dairy felt strongly about the importance of education and provided for Wabula to be able complete his education. Wabula lived in Kenya for 10 years before being able to return back to Uganda. While there, he worked as a field coordinator and translator for international development missions. In addition, he performed two years of counseling and social work at Nairobi Bible Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. Additionally, Wabula worked for five years with local and international social service agencies in Uganda and Kenya. Since Wabula won the green card lottery to come to the United States more than ten years ago, he has actively sought opportunities to give back to his home community of Butiru in much the same way the family who owned the dairy in Kenya gave him the opportunity to receive an education. Before he left, Wabula met with the local leaders (comparable to a city council) to discuss what he could do to improve the community from abroad. The local leaders said the number one priority was to provide education to the children. Because he is familiar with its development needs and priorities, the community’s attitude toward education, its language, customs and communication channels, and formal and informal power and decision making structures, Wabula is uniquely qualified to provide services that the community wants and needs. Build the Future is the culmination of Wabula's dedication to giving back to his home community. |
